John I. Taylor, the owner of the Red Sox, was searching for land for his baseball team in 1911. His father purchased the land of more than 365,000 square feet, bordered by Brookline Avenue. Taylor claimed that the name of the park was inspired by its location in the Fenway neighborhood. However, some claims suggested that the name was a promotion to Fenway Realty, his family company. James E. McLaughlin created the design, and construction started in September. Charles Logue Building Company was the general contractor.
